History
The history of Istanbul dates back to the second millennium BC, when its first inhabitants settled on the Asian side. In the 7th century BC, Byzas, King of Megara, founded Byzantium, named after himself, at the entrance to the Bosphorus. The city came under Persian rule in the 6th century BC and then under Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. The Roman Emperor Septimus Severus conquered Byzantium in 193 AD and it remained under Roman control until the Emperor Constantine the Great named it Constantinople in the 4th century AD and made it the capital of the Roman Empire.
In 1453, Sultan Mehmet II of the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople, renamed it Istanbul and made it the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city flourished again and became an important cultural, political and commercial centre.
